They have not been seen since. For a quarter of a century, the Eritrean authorities have held them incommunicado\u2014without charge, trial, or contact with their families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"><strong>Join PEN International and PEN Centres in demanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/proof-of-life-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">proof of life\u2014now<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"sqsrte-large preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"><strong>Why we must act:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">In September 2001, President Isaias Afwerki\u2019s government shut down Eritrea\u2019s independent media and launched a sweeping crackdown on dissent. Twelve writers and journalists\u2014including poets, playwrights, translators, songwriters, editors, and critics\u2014were arrested for their peaceful expression and criticism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">Since then, the Eritrean authorities have refused to reveal where they are or whether they are even alive. Held in secret detention for nearly 25 years, without access to lawyers, medical care, or family contact, they are among the world\u2019s longest-detained writers and journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sqsrte-large preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">Their disappearance is not only an attack on freedom of expression, but a deliberate attempt to silence independent voices and erase an entire generation of Eritrea\u2019s cultural and intellectual life. Silence enables impunity.<\/p>\n<h5><b>PEN International and PEN Centres launch global \u201cProof of Life\u201d campaign backed by acclaimed writers Ben Okri and Rui Umezawa<\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">PEN has launched a global campaign demanding urgent proof of life, accountability and justice for 12 Eritrean writers and journalists who have been disappeared for 25 years.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Today, 26 June, marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Enforced disappearance is recognised under international law as a form of torture, as it causes severe suffering through secret detention and prolonged uncertainty over fate or whereabouts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 12 writers and journalists include poets, translators, playwrights, songwriters and critics are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Amanuel Asrat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist, poet, art critic and songwriter\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dawit Habtemichael<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist and teacher\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sahle \u2018Wedi-ltay\u2019 Tsefezab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Seyoum Tsehaye<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Said Abdelkadir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Said Idris \u2018Aba Are\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yousif Mohammed Ali<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medhanie Haile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 writer, journalist and translator\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fessehaye \u2018Joshua\u2019 Yohannes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 writer, journalist, playwright, poet and lyricist\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Temesgen Ghebreyesus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist, comedian, actor and photographer\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dawit Isaak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist, writer and playwright\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Matheos Habteab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 journalist<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are among the world\u2019s longest-detained writers and journalists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since their arrest in September 2001, during a sweeping crackdown on independent media following the closure of Eritrea\u2019s press, they have been held incommunicado without charge, trial, legal representation, or contact with their families. Eritrean authorities have never disclosed their whereabouts nor confirmed whether they are alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>\u201cWe are holding candles for you in the Eritrean darkness. We will not let your names or your struggles be forgotten.
