As we express our full solidarity with Arsenijevi\u0107, we once again urge the Serbian authorities to end the vicious cycle of violence and impunity, which continues to fuel relentless attacks,\u2019 <\/em>said Ma Thida, Chair of PEN International\u2019s Writers in Prison Committee.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph BCX0 SCXW218477566 preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"><strong>14 July 2026 \u2013 The Serbian authorities must launch a prompt and thorough investigation into the physical attack against writer Vladimir Arsenijevi\u0107 and hold all perpetrators to account, PEN International said today. Entrenched impunity for crimes against writers and journalists in Serbia must urgently be addressed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph BCX0 SCXW218477566 preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">On 11 July 2026, a group of 20 to 30 youths verbally and physically <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/n1info.rs\/vesti\/pretucen-pisac-vladimir-arsenijevic-u-centru-beograda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>assaulted<\/u><\/a> Vladimir Arsenijevi\u0107 under Branko\u2019s Bridge in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. An award-winning writer, translator and publisher, Arsenijevi\u0107 is the president and creative director of <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.krokodil.rs\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>KROKODIL<\/u><\/a>, an internationally acclaimed association focusing on literature, culture and socio-political programmes. KROKODIL was planning to hold an <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hlc-rdc.org\/en\/public-information\/news\/srebrenica-people-remember-people-11-july-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>event<\/u><\/a> commemorating the <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/news\/un-srebrenica-resolution-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>1995 Srebrenica genocide<\/u><\/a> that day as part of the People Remember People coalition, when Arsenijevi\u0107 was ambushed by unknown assailants, who also stole his phone and sprayed graffiti on the bridge <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/pescanik.net\/vladimir-arsenijevic-beaten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>glorifying war criminals<\/u><\/a>. Several PEN Centres \u2013 including <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/penbih.ba\/2026\/07\/pismo-podrske-za-vladimira-arsenijevica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>PEN Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/u><\/a>, <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/autonomija.info\/srpski-pen-centar-osudio-napad-na-arsenijevica-izraz-zlokobne-atmosfere-u-podeljenom-drustvu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>Serbian PEN<\/u><\/a> and <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penslovenia-zdruzenje.si\/napad-na-pisatelja-je-napad-na-svobodo-izrazanja\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>PEN Slovenia<\/u><\/a> \u2013 expressed their steadfast solidarity with Arsenijevi\u0107, who suffered <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DapNCOViIAG\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=AyxM_84R8mMQkBiJVY1MKs5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>facial injuries<\/u><\/a> as a result of the assault. No one has been held in connection with the attack at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph BCX0 SCXW218477566 preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">KROKODIL has faced systematic and sustained pressure from state and non-state actors, with threats soaring following the Russian Federation\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Notably on 20 September 2024, a group of Russian-speaking men wearing clothes with far-right Serbian imagery entered the premises of KROKODIL, took down a Ukrainian flag and <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/cases\/vladimir-arsenijevi-amp-other-staff-of-krokodil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>intimidated<\/u><\/a> staff. The following month, an activist with KROKODIL was invited to the Serbian Security Information Agency to provide information about the incident. Their phone was left unattended outside the interview room during the meeting. A subsequent forensic analysis by Amnesty International <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/eur70\/8813\/2024\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>found<\/u><\/a> evidence that the NoviSpy Android spyware had been installed on their phone during that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph BCX0 SCXW218477566 preFade fadeIn\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\">As repeatedly documented by PEN International, the situation for freedom of expression in Serbia is <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/rm.coe.int\/europe-press-freedom-report-2026-on-the-tipping-point-press-freedom-20\/48802b4191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>deteriorating<\/u><\/a> at an alarming speed. Independent journalists and creatives are facing physical attacks, verbal threats, smear campaigns and intimidation by public officials, law enforcement officials and individuals who act with complete impunity. <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/safejournalists.net\/alert\/safejournalists-urgently-identify-and-prosecute-person-who-threatened-to-kill-marko-vidojkovic-in-serbia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>Death threats<\/u><\/a> against writer and Honorary PEN member <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/cases\/marko-vidojkovi-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>Marko Vidojkovi\u0107<\/u><\/a> persist, despite Vidojkovi\u0107 reporting them to the Special Prosecutor\u2019s Office for High-Tech Crime. On 20 June 2026, the son of writer and PEN member <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-international.org\/cases\/dinko-gruhonjic-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>Dinko Gruhonji\u0107<\/u><\/a> had his car <a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW218477566 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/europeanjournalists.org\/blog\/2026\/06\/22\/serbia-journalist-dinko-gruhonjic-is-no-longer-safe-in-serbia-the-regime-bears-direct-responsibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><u>vandalised<\/u><\/a> by three individuals wearing balaclavas, ostensibly in retaliation for his father\u2019s work and critical stance.
