On April 28, 2021, Hanna Važnik disappeared, her mother called the militia and found out her daughter was under arrest on the basis of Art. 370 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (insulting state symbols). The reason for the teacher’s detention was her post on Twitter, where she modified words from the national anthem: “We, Extremists, are peaceful people…” (words of the anthem: “We, Belarusians, are peaceful people”). On April 28, Hanna Važnik was arrested, and on April 30, she was released on the personal guarantee of her parents. From April 28 to 30, she was held in Akresina Detention Center.
On June 10, 2021, Hanna Važnik case was transferred to the court. On June 25, the Kastryčnicki District Court in Minsk began to consider the case under Art. 370 of the Criminal Code.
On June 28, the Kastryčnicki District Court in Minsk handed down a sentence: restriction of freedom for a period of home confinement.
Hanna Važnik was recognized as a political prisoner.
